Inexpensive rewards

There is no doubt that motherhood can be challenging, but it can also be very rewarding; especially if one adheres to the adage 'Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.'
I don't believe there is a secret to motherhood. However, it is of particular importance that a mother be her child's best friend from a very young age. The bond of true friendship fosters honesty, self-confidence and trust between mother and child.
It is natural for children to pattern the behaviour of peers, but children who have the guidance of a friend who is also their mother will readily point out what is right to their peers.
I interact with my son on all subjects and give him the opportunity to discuss his feelings. When applicable, I help him to identify pitfalls and their detriments. Whenever he fails to be responsible for his actions, he is told and we discuss the consequences and their effects on others. My son will apologise, we discuss the implications and move on.
He is rewarded when he deserves it and I will use simple, inexpensive things like a kiss or a hug. I will tell him this is the greatest kiss in the world; he will chuckle and say, "Mommy that is great".
