Bolt boost for Kanaan

HOMESTEAD, Florida (AP):

When at top speed, Tony Kanaan can drive 100 metres in less than one second. Usain Bolt, understandably, is impressed.

The Olympic sprint champion from Jamaica - the world's fastest man - sent a pair of spikes to Kanaan as a good-luck token a few weeks ago and could be in the driver's circle of invited guests at today's IndyCar finale, the Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

On the shoes, Bolt scrawled, "TK, just get some speed."

Kanaan keeps the shoes in his office - they're way too big for him to wear - and says he counts Bolt in the small group of athletes like Lance Armstrong who were unquestionably the dominant person in their sport.

"He's a step above anybody," Kanaan said.

Golf, rugby for Olympics

COPENHAGEN (AP):

Tiger Woods can begin his quest for a gold medal, after golf was approved as an Olympic sport yesterday along with rugby sevens. Both sports will be included in the 2016 and 2020 Summer Games, following a vote by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Each sport received majority support in separate votes by the IOC after leading athletes and officials from both camps gave presentations, including a taped video message from Woods and other top pros. Woods has indicated he would play in the Olympics if golf were accepted for 2016.

Maragh joined

ELMONT, New York (CMC):

Jamaican Rajiv Maragh scored two wins Thursday, but lost sole leadership of the jockeys' lead at Belmont Fall Championship Meet when John Velasquez registered a three-timer. Maragh and Velasquez are joint leaders in the competitive title race, with reigning Belmont champion Ramon Dominguez (21) and Alan Garcia (19) stalking in third and fourth, respectively.

Victoria win

NEW DELHI, India (CMC):

Victoria beat Delhi Daredevils by seven wickets in the third match of the Twenty20 Champions League at Feroz Shah Kotla yesterday.

Scores: DELHI DAREDEVILS 98 for eight off 20 overs (Mithun Manhas 25, Virender Sehwag 21; Clint McKay 3-17, Andrew McDonald 2-17, Shane Harwood 2-20). VICTORIA 100 for three off 16.4 overs (Rob Quiney 40, Cameron White 22 not out; Tillakaratne Dilshan 1-14).

Mauresmo in limbo

PARIS (AP):

Former No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo is considering retiring from tennis. The Frenchwoman, who is currently ranked No. 20, decided Thursday to scratch her last two tournaments of the season, at Linz and Luxembourg.

Mauresmo said on her website: "Since I came back from the US Open, I've been trying to practise but I can't find again the desire to come back to competition. I don't want to rush or force things. (I will take) some time to think before making a decision regarding the remainder of my career."
