Sports - a beacon of hope

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH THE mixed emotions of Government going back to the International Monetary Fund, the tedious effects of the recession that looms over our head and the burden of back-to-school for some parents, the performance of our Jamaican athletes, in particular Usain Bolt, is tantamount to that of a glass of water in hell.

It is so refreshing to see our own black brother soar from strength to strength. I trust that Usain's brilliant performance in Berlin serves as a reminder to the Jamaican youths that 'perseverance leads to success'.

Investing handsomely

It is noted that sports has significant value to the development of our beautiful country. It serves as a source of unification and it also sells the country internationally. It would be foolhardy, then, to pay scant regard to this area. We hear every day of Government investing handsomely in areas such as tourism and agriculture. Whatever happen to ideas like implementing more sport centres in communities islandwide where young people can go to practise their skills?

I embrace the notion that Usain Bolt is the 'forerunner' of even greater athletes to walk on Jamaican shores.

I am, etc.,
