'Guilty until proven innocent'
Published: Friday | August 21, 2009
I agree with Michael Dingwall's comments about the condemnation of Rev Dr Paul Lewis by a talk show host. I have heard more than one talk show host put forward this line of argument to publicly find this gentleman guilty without a trial.
We have a serious challenge in our society and the various talk show hosts are just part of the majority who cannot internalise the fact of presumption of innocence until proven guilty. They will tell you they believe so, but they really do not.
I have spoken to well-thinking Jamaicans who will tell me "Yes, I know he is innocent until proven guilty, but with a charge like that hanging over his head, he should not be allowed to speak in public." Until we change our own mindsets, this disagreement will continue.
I am, etc.,
