JOENSUU, Finland (CMC):Jamaica's sprinters Sheri-Ann Brooks and Lerone Clarke scored 100-metre wins at the Vattenfall Elite Games on Thursday.
St Lucian Levern Spencer, who registered a new CARICOM high jump record in Spain last weekend, secured a second European podium finish inside a week when she cleared 1.85 metres and finished third behind the American Deirdre Mullen and Estonia's Anna Iljustsenko.
Brooks, the reigning Common-wealth Games 100-metre champion, battled a head-wind of -1.0 metres per second to win the women's 100 in 11.39 seconds over American Gloria Asumnu (11.40).
Asumnu won the 200 in 22.88 over Brooks (23.02). Clarke clocked 10.25 to win the men's 100 and was third in the 200 in 21.18 behind the USA's Kelly Willie (20.70) and Leroy Dixon (20.92).
The 25-year-old Spencer, the best Caribbean high jump hope at next month's IAAF World Championship in Berlin, posted the same height as Ilustsenko (1.85) as Mullen came away with a comfortable win at 1.91 metres.
At the Zaragoza Gran Premio meet last Saturday, Spencer bettered her own previous CARICOM mark - of 1.94 metres - when she cleared 1.95 metres for second place behind Spain's Ruth Beitia.
The Caribbean also logged a third-place finish in the men's high jump through Barbadian Henderson Dottin (2.14) behind Latvia's Normunds Pupols (2.18) and Jussi Viita, of Finland, at 2.14 metres.
In men's long jump, World University Games champion, South Korean Kim Deok-Hyung was first at 8.17 metres, with Finland's Tommi Evila (8.00m) second and veteran Jamaican James Beckford third at 7.83m.
Brittney Reese, who leads the world list with 7.06m, took the women's long jump at 6.62 metres ahead of Jovanee Jarrett, of Jamaica, who had a best of 6.53m.
