In your neighbourhood: Gutsy Heartease defeat Johnson Mountain

Published: Saturday | July 25, 2009

Heartease will represent the parish of St Thomas at the national level in the SDC Community 20/20 Cricket after beating Johnson Mountain by 19 runs in a thrilling final at Goodyear Oval last weekend.

An opening century stand of 106 between Fitzgerald Anderson (74) and Marshalek Pryce (43 n.o.) gave Heartease a superb start as they amassed an impressive 190 for four from 20 overs.

Gavaskar Brown (2-24) was the pick of the bowlers for Johnson Mountain, but, when his team batted, he got little support from his teammates. Brown scored a brilliant unbeaten 90 but, with one over to go, his team still needed 21 runs to win and they added just one more run.

Heartease's daunting total seemed to have overwhelmed Johnson Mountain, who were reeling at five for 24 early before Brown's outstanding knock carried them to 171, 19 short of their target.

Brown, bearing the name of a cricket legend from India, Sunil Gavaskar, showed class with some belligerent yet clean hitting during his delightful innings, inclusive of 12 fours and four sixes.

Heartease collected $50,000 for winning the parish title, while Johnson Mountain salvaged $25,000 for their efforts.

Milo All Stars challenge Westmoreland X1

A Milo All Stars team, comprising players from the Portmore Metropolitan Under-15 Cricket League, will play against a Westmoreland Under-15 X1 in a 35-over a side match at the Allen Rae Oval, in Retreat, Westmore-land, tomorrow morning at 9:30.

The teams are playing for a Milo Challenge cup donated by Nestlé Jamaica Limited, the owners of the Milo brand. The day, dubbed "A fun filled family day", should see pulsating action from the young cricketers. There will also be a ladies six-a-side cricket match, with First Choice going up against Peter's Ville.

There will be live entertainment, and music from a popular sound system, as well as prizes and surprises from Milo. This is the second match of the series, as the Milo All Stars played a South East St Elizabeth X1 two weeks ago and went down by 83 runs.

The team is expected to fare better this time around. The Milo team will be captained by Delbert Gayle, a national U-15 captain. Gayle will get support from opening batsmen, Ryan Scott, who is the in-form batsman for Portsmouth, and Hamilton Gardens' opening batsman Rae Roberts, while Suwayne Morrison and Malcolm White will lead their bowling attack.

Badminton at Constant Spring

Action in the 14th staging of the Racketeers Badminton Tournament, which started last night, resumes today at the Constant Spring Golf Club.

The C Division is being sponsored by Air Jamaica Limited and the Open sponsored by Mayberry Investments Limited.

The Open will be the premier event this weekend as it features the island's top national players who will be using the event as a warm-up for the Pan American Badminton Championships to be staged in Mexico later this year.

Top seed in the ladies events is Alya Lewis, who is currently ranked number two in Jamaica but number one in the tournament due to the noticeable absence of Nigella Saunders, who is currently off the island.

Lewis is expected to dominate the singles event easily, despite having to face Carla Grant, who was the runner-up in the National Championships.

In the men's singles, it will be a showdown between Gareth Henry, Toussaint Taylor and Kasif Bernard, who are all eyeing the top spot to stamp their dominance on the sport.

Matches will be played all day today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and all day Sunday, with semi-finals of the open being played in the evening and finals of the C Division.

Monday will see the finals of the Open events starting at 7 p.m. while Tuesday will be the awards ceremony at the Redbones Café starting at 7 p.m.

Glittering Star Light win INSPORTS KO Domino

Star Light outshone rivals High Light 250-236 in the KO finals of the INSPORTS/JN Money Transfer Community Domino competition Jacisera Park on Sunday.

The victory confirmed Star Light's superiority over their opponents whom they beat in the semi-finals of the league recently.

As in their recent semi-finals clash, the battle was expected to be another biting contest. Star Light had their noses in front at half-time, but High Light overtook them and led by 10 points during the second period.

In the final hour, however, Star Light roared back decisively and won by 14 points - an improvement from their narrow eight-point semi-final victory in the league.
