Letter of the Day - African roots of patois
THE EDITOR, Sir: In any official description of our creole language (patois), we are told that it includes words of African origin. However, I had never been sure which of our words could be so categorised.
Failing our youths
THE EDITOR, Sir: We adults have failed our youths miserably. Almost every day we see our schoolers on our TV sets demonstrating, hurling insults, throwing stones, etc. These students represent the entire spectrum from basic school to tertiary institution.
New strategies needed by cops
The Editor, Sir: Each time we have a new commissioner of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, we hear of grandiose plans to rein in corruption in the force, wrestle crime to the ground, increase community policing, shift commanders to new divisions, etc.
Fear in Mona
The Editor, Sir: It is with grave concern that I write this letter. My community, Mona Heights, St Andrew, is in serious trouble. There has been an upsurge in all sorts of criminality that has its citizens in fear of their lives on a daily basis.
Free Internet service at the library
The Editor, Sir: It is Saturday May 3. I just entered the Tom Redcam Library on Tom Redcam Avenue, St Andrew, to use its Internet service.
