New strategies needed by cops
published: Sunday | May 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Each time we have a new commissioner of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, we hear of grandiose plans to rein in corruption in the force, wrestle crime to the ground, increase community policing, shift commanders to new divisions, etc.

Yet, we still read of the daily massacres by gun-toting criminals, who do not respect gender or age when they carry out gruesome killings.

Proactive approach

When will the security forces start to stop the talk and 'walk the walk', by putting unceasing pressure on these marauders? Must there always be a 'reactive' approach, instead of a 'proactive' one? Why are we not putting a '24/7', '365/366' days approach to policing in all hot spots, and for that matter, all of Jamaica?

Using the manpower available, we must give no rest to these individuals. We must use curfews, roadblocks and constant searches, until these demons get the message and surrender.

Some citizens seem to always know the 'truth' if there are police shootings/killings (warranted or not), but cower when the deaths are carried out by known assailants from within their communities; showing their grief, but fearful of their lives.

This is too much suffering, for all. Enough is enough.

I am, etc.,
