EDITORIAL - Small Committee provides a good start
The case has long and often been made for a substantial overhaul of Jamaica's defamation laws, not only to bring them in line with emerging modern standards, but more critically, as enhancement of the democratic space and people's right to a higher quality of governance.

Is the Jamaican law an ass?

In Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens has a delightfully officious character named Mr Bumble. At one point, he is informed that "the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction." (Jones)

Run government like a business

Comrade General Secretary Bunting is defiantly sticking to his guns, which places him at ideological odds with the party president. Bunting, when he spoke in the Budget Debate, was highly critical of the carte blanche removal of school fees and health-services fees by the Government. (Henry)

School 'affear'

Never mind the degrees and my infatuation with knowledge. I hated school and was afraid of teachers, students and the long wait in class until my favourite subject: lunch. True, that has changed somewhat, but I am very thankful that it was during the 1960s that I attended basic to primary school... (Taylor)

Teachers at risk

The raft of incidents of teachers being attacked and students injuring each other that has been reported in the media in the past two weeks gives a frightening picture, albeit an incomplete one, of a downward spiral of the discipline in our schools. (Tyson)
