Tivoli, Harbour View eye lead
Published: Wednesday | December 2, 2009
Defending champions Tivoli Gardens and Harbour View will both travel to Clarendon this afternoon to honour their respective rescheduled Digicel Premier League (DPL) fixtures against Humble Lions and Sporting Central Academy (SCA), with their sights set firmly on claiming the league's top spot, which is presently occupied by St Georges Sports Club.
Second-place Harbour View, on 28 points, are only one point behind the league leaders and will be looking to bounce back from their 0-2 defeat at the hands of Waterhouse last Sunday, much to the detriment of the SCA team that has only won two of their eight home games so far.
Harbour View, in the meantime, are particularly dangerous on the road, boasting an unbeaten record in their away duties. The Donovan Hayles-coached team has won all of their away games with the exception of a 2-2 draw with Boys' Town at Collie Smith Drive in their second game of the campaign. Additionally, they have scored a respectable 13 goals in their seven games on the road and will be confident of their chances in front of the Brancourt crowd.
Two points behind
Tivoli Gardens have found themselves in a mini slump, failing to secure all three points in each of their last five games.
Five draws have sent the West Kingston team sliding at a noticeable pace down the table from their first-place position a couple of weeks ago to third place, two points behind the leaders.
However, at Effortville, Tivoli Gardens should get the better of second-to-last Humble Lions (12 points), who continue to let in goals in this competition, especially considering the fact that the defending champions with 24 goals, are the most lethal in front of the goal so far this season.
Additionally, the team's management does not seem to be too bothered by their position in the league at this point of the season.
Assistant coach Max Straw assured that his outfit is not panicking following their run of draws and even suggested that they are a better team coming from behind.
Said Straw: "Panic is a harsh word, we are used to this. Last year we didn't lead the competition at any time at all. As a matter of fact, some of us believe it's better for us to be here; right about there and not really with a big lead out in front. Sometimes we tend to lose discipline when we have a big lead (in the table)."
