Learn to care and share

The Editor, Sir:

My attention has been drawn to the fact that among the books that parents of primary-school children are required to purchase are several workbooks. If children write in these books, they cannot, like other texts, be passed on to other children. If, instead of writing in these workbooks, the children wrote their responses in exercise books, these books could be used by other children in the next school year, thus saving parents' money and the country's foreign exchange.

Parents and teachers need to encourage the caring and sharing of books. Having a pre-owned book and keeping it in good condition should be a source of pride.
