Barca wins Super Cup

MONACO (AP):

Barcelona substitute Pedro Rodriguez scored the only goal deep into extra time to lead the European Cup holder to a 1-0 victory over UEFA Cup winner Shakhtar Donetsk in the European Super Cup yesterday.

Rodriguez pounced on to a pass from Lionel Messi with five minutes of extra time remaining and prodded the ball into the bottom corner to finally break the Ukrainian team's stubborn resistance.

Williams-Williams a no-no

NEW YORK (AP):

Serena and Venus Williams have met in eight Grand Slam finals, most recently at Wimbledon last month. The US Open will not feature No. 9.

The No. 2-seeded Serena and No. 3 Venus are in the same half of the US Open field announced on Thursday, meaning they could face each other only in the semi-finals of the year's last major tournament.

"It is a shame. They're the people to beat. They rise to the occasion at the big ones, especially Serena," three-time US Open champion John McEnroe said. "In interest level alone, it's too bad."

Scots spanked

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP):

David Hussey struck his maiden one-day international century as Australia beat Scotland by 189 runs yesterday.

Hussey staked his claim for selection in the upcoming limited overs matches against England by hitting 111 in 83 balls as the Australians responded to their Ashes defeat to England by scoring 345 runs.

The tourists then bowled out the Scots for 156 in 39.3 overs, with Gavin Hamilton top scoring with 38.

Eduardo charged

LONDON (AP):

UEFA charged Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva yesterday with "deceiving the referee" by diving to win a penalty in a Champions League victory over Celtic.

The Croatia international, who scored from the resulting spot kick, could be banned for Arsenal's first two group-stage matches.

UEFA is accusing Eduardo of deliberately falling after running toward Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc during Wednesday's Champions League match that Arsenal won 3-1 for a 5-1 aggregate.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said the decision to charge Eduardo was a "complete disgrace".
