Throw out those baggy or unflattering jeans. treat your dad to a pair of denims ranging from boot-leg to straight cuts. Knitted vests over a shirt of choice can hide any imperfection, especially around the waist.

He is still sporting his knee-high diamond socks and refuses to stop wearing those worn-out acid wash jeans - 1980s fad - and every time you see him wearing one of those outdated items you think, "If only he would just get with the times."

Well, this Father's Day is the perfect time to bury your fuddy-duddy father's outdated wardrobe and give him a more modern look. Maybe he is just too busy to dedicate time to shopping, or he simply can't be bothered by the trouble of it. So, volunteer to pick up the slack and get him some trendy, fashionable pieces. Depending on your budget, you can either buy one well-needed piece of clothing or accessory, or an entire outfit.

Remember, when shopping for your dad, don't overdo it because you really don't want to send him in total shock resulting in the items becoming souvenirs or decorative pieces at home. Always take into consideration his sense of style and personality. Nevertheless, it's always fun to open up your dad's eyes to the world of fashion.

Male Ego was assigned the task to help highlight some of the 'what's hot' pieces to upgrade your dad's sense of style. Located at Southdale Plaza in St Andrew, Male Ego caters to the very fashionable male and to those who just need a little push to bring out that trendy side.

While this is many times ignored, fashionable and eye-catching cufflinks are a perfect gift for dad. Get him a set if he doesn't already own one. He will one day find use for it or will be motivated to start wearing it when the time comes.

For a very casual day out, a pair of linen pants is ideal. Combine it with a checkered shirt which features two front pockets. If your dad loves to show off his assets, this shirt would make a lovely gift.

Ties, depending on the occasion, are critical. Get your dad a tie that is neutral in colour, if he doesn't have many, or upgrade and buy him a flamboyant and trendy tie. Remember, you can't go wrong with striped shirts and a navy suit.

God forbid he still wears a digital watch designed for children or one that looks like it has been through World War I. Bling out his hand with a fashionable watch so he can get the time in style.

Checkered pants are definitely in this season for men. The designs are subtle and do not overwhelm the very conservative man. This pair goes well with a cinnamon-coloured shirt that has two front pockets. Quite up to the time!

If things are falling or sticking out when your father pulls out his wallet, there is a garbage bin somewhere waiting to claim it. Get him a new one made of good quality leather and with lots of compartments.

Get him to take a break from the shoes and sneakers. Buy a pair of slippers or sandals that can be worn with jeans on casual occasions.

Every man needs a good suit. Since times are tough, get all your siblings to contribute to buying Dad one. Check out the accent pieces, including tie and cufflinks, and splurge!

Belts are essential to any man's wardrobe but many men do not pay enough attention and oftentimes don belts with peeled or cracked layers. If your dad is in dire need of a belt, buy him a good quality one of neutral colour. - Colin Hamilton/freelance Photographer

Dressing GQ style

Three important tips when dressing GQ style, according to owner of Male Ego, Donavan McCarthy.

1For special formal occasions, a navy blue suit is the more acceptable colour. Just like how a woman should have a little black dress stashed away, a man should have a navy blue suit.

2Cufflinks should match the colour of the tie.

3Pocket pieces should match a colour in the shirt and not the tie, which was the case trends ago.

4Stripe on stripe is no longer taboo in the fashion world; it's actually GQ.
