In action from last weekend's junior chess championships, held at the RBTT head office in New Kingston, the Under-18 category was a tight battle between Stuart James of the University of the West Indies and Glenmuir's Laurence Davey.
Both players ended on 5.5 points from six games, having drawn their game against each other. It was left to the tie-break system to separate the two. Pre-tournament favourite, Stuart James, was adjudged the winner and National Under-18 champion.
The Under-16 category was a no-contest as Campion College's Philip Pryce used his greater experience to outlast all six of his opponents and secure six points to take the title. Audriana Jackson of Gaynstead High School took the National Under-16 Girls title.
The Under-14 category saw the only big upset of the tournament, with the victory of Calabar's Shreyas Smith, who scored five points to take the top position, while in the Under-12 age-group, Campion College's Andrew Folkes continued the trend with a perfect performance, winning all six of his games to emerge the top player in his age group.
Other winners on the day were Lawrence Foreman of Sts Peter and Paul (Under-8) and Queen's Prep's Rochelle Porter (girls Under-8); Hopefield Prep's Elias Issa (Under-10). Rachel Miller, also of Hopefield Prep, took the National Under-10 girls' title.
Queen's advance in style
Queen's ended the preliminary round with a bang, when they thrashed Starlight Juniors 22-11 in the St James Goodwill Open Netball League.
The win handed Queen's Zone C honours over Angelets, and they join Angels 'A' and Angels 'B' as the only unbeaten teams in the competition so far. Sashalee Gaynor's 17 goals and Kimberlee Perry with five were the top shooters for the winners, while Ayesha Paul netted eight goals and Stacian Facey three for the losers.
Queen's will now meet Angels 'A', Lime 'A' and Starlight Eagles in Pool 1 of the quarter-finals, and Angelets will meet Angels 'B', St James Development Squad and William Knibb in Pool 2.
Rivoli, Naggo Head advance
Premier League club Rivoli United and Super League outfit Naggo Head booked their spots in the semi-finals of the St Catherine Co-operative Credit Union sponsored knockout football competition following contrasting wins over Meadows and Rodwood Wednesday night at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
Rivoli got past a spirited Meadows team on penalties and prevailed 4-3 in the shoot-out.
Devon Hodges, Kirk Ramsey, Fidel Anderson and Mike Soares scored penalties for Rivoli, while Devon Francis, Andre Llewellyn and Sivaun Scott netted their kicks for Meadows. In normal time, Devon Hodges shot Rivoli into the lead with a glancing header in the ninth minute, but Meadows received a lifeline with Devon Francis' spectacular goal in the 40th minute. His 50-yard shot dipped inside the crossbar and caught goalkeeper Marlon Henry napping.
In the earlier game, Naggo Head clipped Rodwood 2-1. Rodwood's Andre Johnson's own goal in the 43rd minute gave Naggo Head a fortunate lead, but Romaine Gibbon would equalise for Rodwood in the 59th minute, prior to Nicholas Forbes giving Naggo Head the victory with a 67th-minute strike.
In next Wednesday's semi-final at the Prison Oval, Division One Royal Lakes, who eliminated Super League club Bodles 3-1 on Tuesday, oppose Premier League team Portmore United while Rivoli play Naggo Head. Portmore are the defending champions.
