PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

The famous Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC) named the young West Indies batsman Darren Bravo its 2009 Sportsman of the Year at the club's annual awards and dinner on Friday night.

The 20-year-old left-handed batsman made his West Indies debut this year and was rewarded for a solid season with the QPCC honour at the club's Century Ballroom in the city.

Among his main achievements during the season, Bravo stroked hundreds in the West Indies first-class season against Barbados (113) and the Windward Islands (105).

He had also scored 97 in their first meeting against Barbados and 107 in the 2009 North/South Gerry Gomez Classic.

Bravo made his debut for West Indies against India in the one-day international (ODI) series in June at Sabina Park in Jamaica and was a key player for T&T in the IPL Twenty20 Championship series in India, where the Caribbean side surprised the world with a runner-up finish.

For the QPCC Sportsman of the Year award, Bravo turned back the challenge of fellow cricketers, former T&T youth player Marlon Barclay, Leeward Islands and West Indies middle-order batsman Runako Morton, discarded T&T and Windies off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth and former T&T youth fast bowler Rishaad Harris.

Bravo, younger brother of West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, also picked up the 2009 QPCC Cricketer of the Year award.

T&T Under-19 opening batsman Nicholas Alexis was the recipient of the Phil Thompson Youth Personality award, while the Youth Cricketer of the Year title went to wicketkeeper-batsman Anthony Balgobin.

Left-handed batsman Justin Guillen, who made his national senior team debut earlier this year, was awarded the Kingston Trophy.

T&T's most successful cricket captain, Daren Ganga, delivered the feature address.
