Red-hot 'Firehouse' aim to celebrate in style

RAMPANT Waterhouse will look to crown their 30th-anniversary celebrations in style with victory over St Georges Sports Club when both teams meet in a Digicel Premier League second-round match at Waterhouse Mini-Stadium this evening at 6:00.

Waterhouse will also be using the match to honour the services of its veteran striker Kevin Lamey, who has been with the club for 14 consecutive seasons, during which he has scored more than 250 goals.

As he has done in years gone by, Lamey has been a key ingredient fuelling the resurgence of Waterhouse who, after going pointless for their first five matches, have shot to life in this competition and are slowly beginning to look like the vintage 'Firehouse' team that last lifted the title in the 2005-2006 season.

The light blue and yellow-clad Drewsland team has powered its way to fifth on 23 points, going unbeaten in nine of its last 10 outings.

Leadership tussle

St Georges, who are in a three-way tussle for the leadership, will undoubtedly be looking to spoil the Waterhouse party in their quest to lift the title.

They now sit third on 29 points, the same as Harbour View, who are one point behind leaders and defending champions Tivoli Gardens.

St Georges, though, possess an inferior goal difference to Harbour View and will not be offering any pleasantries as they look to build on last week's 2-1 home victory against lowly August Town, which represented only their second win of the round.

Meanwhile, defending champions Tivoli Gardens muscled their way back to the top of the league with a comfortable 2-0 win away at Humble Lions in a rescheduled midweek game and should enjoy a similar result when they play another Clarendon team, Sporting Central Academy, at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.

Sporting Central Academy (16 points) seem somewhat dormant in eighth position and things are not expected to get better for them this week. They have recorded just one win in their last 11 matches.

Harbour View could also claim the lead in the event of a Tivoli slip-up. The Stars of the East should fancy their chances against last-place August Town who, even at this relatively early stage of the competition, are vying hard for relegation to the lower leagues.

A tougher battle is expected when Arnett Gardens, who have been doing well in recent weeks and are now on 18 points in seventh spot, welcome the inconsistent Rivoli to the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

By their usually high standards, last season's runners-up, Portmore United, have had a miserable season to date, managing only five wins in their campaign so far. Village United have not fared much better, and with only two wins to their credit should find it difficult holding the former champions at bay.

Struggles

Humble Lions have had a rough opening season and their struggles are expected to continue when they journey to face Boys' Town at the Collie Smith Drive. The last time the teams met at Effortville, Humble Lions surprised the Red Brigade with a 1-0 victory.

That seems like a long time ago. At that point, Humble Lions had got points from two of their three opening games. However, they have only won twice since then and are regular companions of August Town at the foot of the league, a position once held by a Waterhouse team intent on extending its rampaging ways, especially as it is their 30th anniversary and a special celebration for star striker Lamey.
