National senior team coach, Junior Bennett, has given a passing grade to his batsmen, but marked down the fast bowlers for their inconsistent line as the final Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) trial enters its penultimate day today at Melbourne Oval.

Resuming on 348 for five, Tamar Lambert's XI were dismissed for 427 with Carlton Baugh Jr getting 63, a knock which included 10 fours, and Daren Powell chipped in with 55, which was laced with five fours. Xavier Marshall had earlier made 125.

Left-arm spinner Andre Dwyer led the bowling with 3-122 and was chiefly supported by Nkrumah Bonner (2-31) and Andre Russell (2-70).

In their turn at the crease, David Bernard's XI closed on 168 for three. Danza Hyatt hit 57 and Donovan Pagon 51 in a 92-run second wicket stand after Powell dismissed Brenton Parchment for zero.

Unbroken partnership

Horace Miller, 35, and Bernard, 14, will resume their unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 50 when play resumes this morning at 10:00.

Fast bowlers picked up three wickets on the first two days, which appears to justify Bennett's assessment that they are not bowling in the right areas.

"I am not happy with the areas they are bowling but as the game goes on we will see how it progresses," said Bennett.

However, he had high praise for the spinners.

"I think the bowlers really stuck to the task, especially the spinners," he said.

The total amassed by Lambert's XI marked the fourth time in three matches that a team had scored in excess of 400 runs, and this pleased the coach.

"The wicket has been playing well and the batsmen have capitalised on it. They have spent some time at the crease, which is very important," he noted.
