KELLY'S WORLD - It was an interesting week

KELLY

A who lef'? That's what I'm really beginning to wonder as it seems people in high places are either calling it quits or are getting the boot these days. The governor of the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) Derick Latibeaudiere was unceremoniously 'shubbed' from one of the most important (and ultimately stressful) jobs in the country. Rumours aplenty (as usual) about the real reason why, but I'm not getting into those.

It will be weird to see somebody else in that chair from now on, but Latibeaudiere probably will benefit most, if only because he might be able to maintain his own sanity. In case you haven't heard, the country's finances aren't at their healthiest and steering that BOJ ship would drive a psychiatrist nuts. By my sarcastic count, this latest firing adds up to about 'one whole heap a people' axed from boards or other entities since the Jamaica Labour Party took over. Jobs, jobs, jobs indeed.

Resignation

Then, close on the heels of that termination, Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin handed in his resignation, again! This time, it seems like it's really for good (we think). Unlike Latibeaudiere, Lewin did things on his own terms. Being commish can also easily send you to the loony bin. Now, I hear people throwing about lots of names like Owen Ellington, Jevene Bent and even former crime fighter Reneto Adams (couldn't bother writing out his middle names). Whoever gets the job needs to remember though that this is no 'pyaw pyaw' work. They need to have street smarts, guts to make tough calls (like weeding out the bad police) and have a taste for coffee to help them stay awake during those long hours. Good luck with that!

Throw in the two executives from the HEART Trust/NTA who also stepped down and we seem to have a few vacancies. Too bad I'm not qualified for any of them. And even if I were, I can't take the headache. I pop a blood vessel if the cable goes out.

In news not related to firings/resignations, I hear people criticising Usain Bolt (never out of the news for long is he?) for adopting a baby cheetah. The detractors are saying a bunch of stuff like he should have donated the money to charities out here or fund worthwhile initiatives in our part of the world. The only problem I have with the cheetah is the name, Lightning Bolt. I would have called him Speedy or Ginger or something. But Lightning Bolt just sounds a little unimaginative. Hopefully, 'likkle Bolt' doesn't get loose and decide to make any humans his lunch. Later.

Tell me who you think gets the boot next at daviot.kelly@gleanerjm.com
