In your neighbourhood: St Cyprian Prep rally champions

St Cyprian defeated Quest Prep 5-3 to be crowned Bigga/JISA Prep School Netball rally champions, following competition at the Leila Robinson Court on Thursday.

In the third-place play-off, Holy Childhood clipped Our Lady of the Angels Prep 3-2.

Earlier, the 2009 Bigga/JISA Prep Schools' Netball competition was launched at the same venue.

Twenty-seven schools will take to the courts in this year's staging of the competition, which will get under way on Tuesday. The schools will compete in four zones in a round-robin format. The zone winners and the runner-ups will advance to two groups, which will again play in a round-robin format after which the group winners will compete in the finals.

The participating schools are

Zone 1: Hydel, Lannaman, Mona, Emmanuel Christian Academy, Cavalry, Liberty Academy and Bright Beginnings.

Zone 2: Quest, Sts Peter & Paul, St John the Baptist, St Cyprian, Excel and Ardenne.

Zone 3: Vaz, Alvernia, St Cecelia, Meadowbrook, St Andrew, Dunrobin and Portmore Missionary.

Zone 4: Trafalgar Christian, Our Lady of the Angels, St Theresa, Mavisville, Holy Childhood, Suthermere and Wolmer's Prep.

INSPORTS football

The inaugural staging of the Institute of Sports Limited (INSPORTS)-sponsored All-Island Community Football Championships is set to kick off on October 31 with a double-header in St Thomas.

Plans are already in place as several meetings have been held with sports officers from all 14 parishes to identify teams from the communities to participate in the four-monthlong competition. Two teams will come from St Catherine and St Andrew and one from Portmore.

The winning team will receive $500,000, gold medals and a trophy; second-place $150,000, silver medals and a trophy; third-place $100,000, bronze medals and a trophy; and fourth place $50,000 and a trophy. Each parish champion will receive a trophy.

St Thomas KO football

Action in the James Robertson-sponsored St Thomas Football Association KO competition continues tomorrow with two games.

Port Morant All-Stars take on Danvers Pen at Cotton Tree in Port Morant and York tackle Lyssons at York Sports Complex, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

In last week's matches, Yallahs, Seaforth, Bath and Heartease were winners.

Bath recorded the round's biggest win, beating Division Two team Baptist Alliance 5-0, thanks to a brace from Ovan Samuda in the 84th and 90th minutes. Other scorers were Kerrick Sinclair (30th), Duran Moore (61st) and Fredrick Thompson (75th).

Leon Martin scored in the 47th, 87th and 90th minutes to carry Yallahs to a 3-1 win over Delta Force.

In other games, Seaforth defeated Hillside 2-0 with goals from Ernest McQueen in the 52nd and Kenton Stewart in the 56th minutes.

Heartease, returning to top-flight football in the parish - having been promoted to the major league - scored a hard-fought 3-2 win over Sanstar.

MultiCare netball clinic

Physical education (PE) teachers from the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools participated in the MultiCare Train The Trainers netball clinic at the MultiCare Sports Complex, Breezy Castle Centre, downtown Kingston, on Wednesday.

The netball clinic is the first in the MultiCare Foundation's annual Train The Trainer series of sports clinics for PE teachers.

Conducted by Barbara Sinclair, an instructor of the Jamaica Netball Association, the clinic was held to update teachers on the rules and regulations of the upcoming MultiCare Inter-Schools Netball Competition scheduled for November.

Sinclair stressed the importance of teamwork, noting that the key to success involved relationships on and off the court.

"The responsibility of team members is to assist the team via the individual's response and to do everything to ensure that the team is successful," she said.

The MultiCare Train The Trainers series continues with the hosting of a volleyball clinic on Tuesday.

High school hockey development tourney

Circus Circle Hockey Club will host a development tournament for high schools Under-19 boys and girls today at the Mona hockey facility.

The tournament will take a seven-a-side format, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m. It aims to assist the coaches by providing a platform for technical skills development, and is approved by the Jamaica Hockey Federation.

During the seven-a-side tournament, the club will conduct skills development clinics to demonstrate new International Hockey Federation rules and interpretation.

There will also be hockey skills test and tricks competition prior to the semi-finals, featuring the individuals from the respective schools.

Newstead victorious

Newstead Primary whipped Iona Preparatory 6-0 in action from the James Bond Beach (JBB) Primary School Championships at JBB Complex in Oracabessa, St Mary.

Amen Nickle hit the net twice, scoring in the 10th and 25th minutes, while Mark Wallace, Brendon Jones, Romaine Evans and Kemayle Williamson netted additional goals in the 11th, 20th, 39th and 43rd minutes, respectively.

In the day's second game, a converted 16th-minute penalty by Davian Bennett was enough to earn Galina Primary a 1-0 win over Preston Primary.

On the netball courts, Iona Preparatory totally demolished Preston Primary, winning 34-1, as Rhonda-Lee Green scored 25 goals from 31attempts.

Portmore cricket continues tomorrow

The Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Portmore Cricket League continues tomorrow with four games.

At Ken's Wildflower sports ground, the Wray and Nephew development squad takes on Ken's Wildflower in a group A fixture. In another group A game, Belmont and Washington CC do battle at Lime Tree Oval. In group B, Portsmouth play Hamilton Gardens at Hamilton Gardens, while Colours take on Portmore Pines at the Bridgeport sports ground. All games begin at 11 a.m.

Westchester United win Colin Fagan domino

Westchester United defeated Westchester Nukuzs 250-232 in the final of the second annual Colin Fagan South East St Catherine domino league at Garveymeade Sports Club, Portmore, last Sunday.

Although United won the Westchester Derby by 18 points, the large crowd on hand were treated to an exciting final with both teams taking turns to lead at various stages.

United won for themselves the $70,000 prize and trophy donated by the member of parliament for South East St Catherine, Colin Fagan. The runners-up secured $40,000, while Ken's Wildflower and outgoing champions, Passagefort United, finished third and fourth, respectively, and will also receive cash incentives. There were nine participating teams. The presentation to the winners will be made early next month.

Meanwhile, the launch of the 2009/2110 Portmore domino league will take place on Sunday, November 1, at Garveymeade Sports Club, starting at 1p.m. The dress parade is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Roy Letts takes Hot Shots pool title

Former top-ranked player Roy Letts won his second title of the season when he defeated Rhys Chen from Ocho Rios 2-1 in the final of the 12th-ranked pool tournament (double elimination) last weekend at Hot Shots Pool Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road.

Letts thus took home the $50,000 prize and trophy donated by Pool Tables & Billiards Supplies Limited, while Chen secured $20,000 and a trophy for having finished second.

MoBay's and one of the island's top players, Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove, finished third, while Jodi Mullings was fourth, both receiving $5,000 for their efforts.

The season's number-one ranked player, Ewart Hall, was knocked out quite early in this tournament by Calhoun Melville, who himself was beaten by Letts in the quarter-final.

Letts also blanked 'Schoolboy' Blagrove 3-0 in one semi-final.

The tournament attracted close to 50 players from across the island, including the Corporate Area, Portmore, MoBay, May Pen and Ocho Rios. The top women also participated - Nicky Lawrence, Francine Cardoza and Grace Ching Sang-Letts, wife of Roy.

St Catherine FA league on today

The St Catherine FA Captain's Bakery Major League football competition continues today with three matches.

The big clash of the day is between last year's beaten finalists, Flamingo and De la Vega, at Gordon Pen. In other games, Rodwood host DB Basovak at Waterford High School, while Spanish Town Police welcome Arlington at the Police Academy.

In games last Saturday, DB Basovak FC and Black Lion FC copped identical 1-0 wins over Dunbeholden FC and Albion FC, respectively, while Rodwood FC and Arlington FC played to a 0-0 draw.

Flamingo survived a scare last week, as they edged promoted Portsmouth 3-2 in one of two games at Prison Oval. De la Vega whipped another promoted club, Cumberland, 4-1.
