Row over ban stumps naming of Jamaica squad

The naming of Jamaica's 14-member squad for next month's regional one-day championship has been delayed as a result of an appeal hearing into the local bans of St Catherine Cricket Club captain, Tamar Lambert, and off-spinner, Bevan Brown for their alleged roles in their team's ill-concluded Jamaica semi-pro final round Super League match against Melbourne Cricket Club earlier this year.

The two-day match, which ended in less than a day, noticeably saw top Jamaican players performing below par in what was widely perceived as a protest to a decision by the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) not to deduct points from eventual champions Manchester Lions for the ineligible use of player during the championship. The champions were instead hit with a record fine.

St Catherine and Melbourne, who finished third and second, respectively, have since taken the JCA to court on the matter and a ruling is expected early next year.

Lambert, it is understood, was banned for reshuffling his team's batting order, among other charges, and was handed a five-match ban. Brown, who bats right-naded but batted left-handed during the match, was banned for three matches.

The bans, however, have not gone down well with the players and their clubs and it is understood that they have appealed.

Trial matches

This would clear the air for both players to become eligible for selection, having already sat out local Twenty20 matches and the fourth and final trial matches, which ended at Kensington Park yesterday. The two had participated in the first two trial matches.

"We will not be naming the squad until after a board meeting tomorrow (today), where the appeal for Lambert and Brown will be heard," said chairman of selectors, Nehemiah Perry.

"The board meeting will held late in the evening and, as such, the squad is likely to be named on Friday," he added.

Meanwhile, Chris Gayle was the star of yesterday's final trial match.

Batting at number nine, to allow other players a chance to impress the national selectors, Gayle cracked a near run-a-ball 127 not out, inclusive of 11 fours and six sixes, albeit in a losing effort as his team, Gayle XI, went down by seven wickets to Brenton Parchment XI.

Gayle XI first made 285-9 with fast bowler Andre Russell providing best support to Gayle with 33 against Parchment 3-39 and Odean Brown 2-44.

Parchment XI, behind a brilliant 105 from Shawn Findlay and 86 not out from Carlton Baugh Jr, responded with 286-3. Left-arm seamer Krismar Santokie, 1-31, and Brendan Nash, 1-10, were the most economical bowlers for Gayle's XI.
