The Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) presented national women's football finalists, Barbican and Portmore Strikers, with 20 pairs of boots each at the state-run agency's office at the National Arena on Monday.

Netball clubs Ebony Strikers and Red Challenge were also on the receiving end, each getting 20 balls.

"We are happy that more people are recognising women's football in Jamaica," said Charles Edwards, coach of champions Barbican. "The contribution is great to us. It is significant and we hope that others in corporate Jamaica will recognise what is happening and jump onboard also.

Barbican sealed the championship for the fifth time Sunday by beating Portmore 6-0 in the return-leg final at Ferdie Neita Park on Sunday to register a 10-2 aggregate win. They had won the first-leg encounter 4-2.

Cornell Clarke, coach of Portmore Strikers, expressed gratitude for the donation.

"This contribution means a lot to Portmore. With the economic crisis in mind, scarce resources and finances, it will go a far, far way for Portmore. We are indeed happy and thankful to the Institute of Sports for this kind gesture and it will really, really go a far way.

"I know the girls will be elated because sponsorship is hard to come by. Footwear is always an important gear for us and this is a welcome gesture for us."

The Richmond Park-based Red Challenge Club, and Ebony Strikers from Hagley Park, echoed similar sentiments, both claiming that with sufficient balls available for training, one can expect rapid improvements.
