Williamses' double

NEW YORK (AP):

The Williams sisters won the US Open women's doubles title yesterday, two days after Serena's ugly exit in the singles semi-finals.

Serena returned with her sister, Venus and rolled to an easy victory for their 10th Grand Slam doubles championship.

It was a 6-2, 6-2 win over defending champions Cara Black and Liezel Huber.

Serena apologises

NEW YORK (AP):

Serena Williams issued a second statement about what she called her "inappropriate outburst" at the US Open, saying she wants to "sincerely apologise".

The US Tennis Association distributed Williams' latest comments yesterday - more than 36 hours after the 11-time Grand Slam singles champion's profanity-laced tirade at a line judge.

"I want to sincerely apologise first to the lines woman, Kim Clijsters, the USTA and mostly tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst.

"I'm a woman of great pride, faith and integrity and I admit when I'm wrong," it continued. "I need to make it clear to all young people that I handled myself inappropriately and it's not the way to act - win or lose, good call or bad call, in any sport, in any manner. I like to lead by example. We all learn from experiences, both good and bad, I will learn and grow from this, and be a better person as a result."

India win

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP):

A century from Sachin Tendulkar and five wickets from Harbhajan Singh helped India beat Sri Lanka by 46 runs to win the the tri-nation cricket championship in yesterday's final.

Tendulkar scored 138 for his 44th limited-over hundred and was supported by innings of 56 from Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh to lead India to 319-5 after winning the toss and batting.

Sri Lanka started its chase well but succumbed to pressure as wickets fell at crucial times and were bowled out for 273 off 46.4 overs.
