No ruling on Jamaica doping case before Worlds end

BERLIN (AP):

THE FIVE Jamaican runners provisionally cleared of doping are eligible to run at the World Championships, leaving a final decision to enter them to the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA), the IAAF International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said yesterday.

Jamaica's Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) will not rule on their fate until after the championships close on Sunday, leaving the IAAF no option but to allow them in, IAAF secretary general Pierre Weiss said.

"It is in the hands of the Jamaican team to decide whether to enter the athletes or not," Weiss said.

The five - Yohan Blake, Sheri-Ann Brooks, Allodin Fothergill, Lansford Spence and Marvin Anderson - could run in the relays where Jamaica is a medal favourite.

Weiss said the IAAF did not have the power to suspend the athletes without a ruling from JADCO. But he also added that it is in the Jamaicans' interest not to have the athletes run.

"If they don't compete, the situation is clear - they don't compete," Weiss said.

If the athletes do run and the panel later declares them guilty of doping, the IAAF would have to disqualify the affected Jamaican relay team and strip them of any medal they might win.

Weiss said world track officials were meeting with the JAAA yesterday in Berlin to discuss the impasse.
