Greatest sprinter of all time

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE WORLD has been stunned by Usain Bolt who broke his own world record with a 9.58 100m run in the IAAF World Athletic Championships in Berlin, Germany. Bolt could justifiably make the claim of being the greatest sprinter of all time.

It is difficult to escape conclusions about Jamaicans as a special people who have produced the first and third-fastest men in the world, on the same world stage, at the same time. It is difficult to ignore the enormous marketing and development opportunity that the Bolt-Jamaica brand presents at this time in our history.

Usain Bolt Legend Stadium

I call on the Government to reverse itself in giving the Trelawny multi-purpose stadium to UTech and, instead, to make it available for expansion as a Usain Bolt Legend Stadium. The Government should then market a track and field event to be hosted at the BL Stadium for world record holders event for that stadium in August 2010 and then in each off years when there are no big international championships going forward. The combination of Usain Bolt, Trelawny yam and Trelawny Bolt Legend Stadium is a winner. It promises to be an enormously successful sports-tourism project.

As far as Bolt is concerned he may have to retire early and build on his legend. Congrats to all concerned. It was truly marvelous.

I am, etc.,
