Respect the young ones

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM appalled and disappointed that the relevant authorities have continued to allow our public spaces to be used by advertising agents and certain individuals to display the crudest and, sometimes, the most sexually explicit material.

I have observed on my travels around the island the crude drawing on walls of village and town squares, depicting scantily clad females in advertisements about go-go clubs. In addition, it seems every light post is adorned by posters with images of semi-nude women advertising various dances.

Explain this

The billboards are no exceptions. There is one in Liguanea advertising a popular brand of condom that advises users not to call the fire department, as they are only having an orgasm. A funny line, you might say, but try explaining what is an orgasm to a six year old as you drive by with him or her and you get a different picture.

Mr Editor I have travelled to many countries and visited many metropolitan areas and have never seen anything like this. As a grown man most of what I see offend my personal sensibilities but I am really more concerned about our young minds.

How, as a society, can we allow the actions of a few selfish and indiscriminate people to potentially harm our young by continuing to expose them at such early ages to these materials? Please let us allow our children the space and time to grow up.

I am, etc.,
