Unbeaten Jamaican featherweight boxer Nicholas Walters has undergone surgery for a hand injury he suffered while defeating Colombian Ernesto Vasquez on Saturday night.
Walters damaged his right hand in the third round of the non-title bout and X-rays revealed a fracture that required surgery.
The former Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) gold medallist underwent surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for three months.
The injury has also forced his promoters to remove him from the August 20 card he had been booked for.
"He injured right hand, near the knuckles, and he will need time to recover," promoter Hector Villareal told CMC Sport.
Walters floored Vasquez twice in the sixth and final round and referee Julio Alvarado stopped the contest at two minutes, 23 seconds of the round.
Stiff bout
The bout was considered the stiffest test in Walters' fledgling pro career and the 23-year-old despatched the experienced Colombian impressively to improve his unblemished record to 12-0 with 10 knockouts.
Villareal was pleased with the skills Walters showed in spite of being handicapped by the injury.
"He was very careful and had to measure his performance well because of the injury. He caught the guy two or three times in the first and second rounds, sending the guy to the ropes a couple for times.
"After he injured his hand in the third round, Nicholas was more careful," Villareal said.
