  • Cornwall dethrones Middlesex

    Cornwall defeated Middlesex by five wickets to take the 20th Kingston Wharves Under 15 cricket title on Thursday at Jamaica Broilers Cricket Ground.

    Sent to bat Middlesex, last year's champions, were blown away for 95 in 26 overs. Aldane Thomas led the way with 35 for Middlesex against Fabian Allen, three for 18 and Ramaal Lewis, three for 10.

    Cornwall, in reply, started cautiously and were 11 for two in the ninth over, but recovered to end at 97 for five in 28.4 overs. Marquino Mindley with 33 top-scored for Cornwall, while Fabian Allen, 32, provided good support. Bjorn Brown took two for 10.

    Cornwall's coach Jerry Reid congratulated his team on a good win while looking forward to more success as they prepare to face the Best of the Rest team later this month.

    Surrey defeated the Development Team by 152 runs after making 265 for four from 50 overs, replying to 113 for eight in 50 overs.

    The 2009 champions will now meet the Best of the Rest team on Saturday, August 22, at Sabina Park in a 50-over match, starting at 10 a.m.

  • St Catherine CC camp

    The 17th season of the St Catherine Cricket Club Milo Camp began on Monday and continues at Chedwin Park until August 21.

    The camp, which started in 1992, is again targeting children aged 9-15 who are interested in cricket.

    Club coach Ephraim McLeod is the coordinator of the camp and will be assisted by outstanding former national wicketkeeper/ batsman Renford Pinnock Sr, head of cricket at G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sports; Gibbs Williams, national and club captain Tamar Lambert and Jamaica leg-spin bowler Odean Brown.

    Every year, kids from all across the parish participate in the St Catherine CC Milo Camp, which has played a crucial role in the early development of many players including Lambert, West Indies fast bowler Jermaine Lawson and other national players like Danza Hyatt and Keith Hibbert.

    During the two weeks, campers will be exposed to the basic tenets of the game and gain valuable lessons honing their skills.

  • MultiCare summer camp

    The closing and awards ceremony for the MultiCare Sports Summer Camp and MultiCare Environmental Residential Summer Camp will be held on Monday at Breezy Castle Centre, 34 Harbour Street, at 2 p.m.

    The objective of the camp was to provide youngsters with a safe haven for productive recreational activities in softball, hockey, netball, basketball and volleyball, away from strife-torn neighbourhoods and idling on street corners; to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and peaceful coexistence among children; to promote environmental education and to give city children an opportunity to experience rural life.

    Emphasis is on the MultiCare Sports fundamentals of discipline, responsibility, love and respect for self and others and self-esteem.

    More than 100 boys and girls from the neighbourhoods of Rae Town and downtown Kingston took part in the camp.

  • Cumberland, Watson Grove advance

    Cumberland and Rodwood advanced to the semi-finals of the Keith Gentles/Pines Imaging Centre Portmore Under-17 football league on Thursday.

    Bridgeport Manning Cup star Kemar Philpots shot Cumberland ahead with a goal near the death, giving his team a 2-1 win over Rodwood at the Cumberland playing field.

    Both teams, drawn in Zone A, ended their fixtures on 25 points each but Cumberland advanced with a superior goal difference. Cumberland's Ojay Peart gave his team the lead, but that was quickly cancelled by Rodwood's Oshane Greaves. With the game heading to a draw, Philpots unleashed the match-winner.

    The other semi-final spot from the zone went to Watson Grove, which beat Christian Pen 4-0 to qualify with 26 points. Zone B teams, defending champions Portmore United and Wanderers, are already through to the semis . The semi-finals are set for next Tuesday.

  • Hustlers win six-a-side league

    Hustlers won the inaugural Westchester six-a-side tournament 1-0 over Barcelona in the final at Westchester last Saturday night.

    Rohan Brown scored the all-important goal in the 20th minute.

    At the end of the match, Nicola Francis presented the winning team with the championship trophy.

  • Portsmouth claim Christeen Cummings Cup

    Portsmouth took their first lien on the Christeen Cummings Cup following a four-wicket victory over Hamilton Gardens in the Milo-sponsored Portmore Metropolitan U-15 Cricket League final at the Ken's Wildflower sports ground on Sunday.

    Hamilton Gardens batted first and crashed to 89 all out in 18 overs. Only female player Priscilla Wilson, 15, made double figures. Medium pacer Malcolm White bagged 5-23, while Javion McFarlane (2-26) and Charles Tufton (2-15) shared four wickets.

    Portsmouth, coached by Ambrose Hinds, the father of former West Indies batsman, Wavel, replied with 92-6, with Donmarie Stultz leading the way with 32 not out. Dean Parks took 2-20.

  • Third Avenue United, God Bless victorious

    Third Avenue United and God Bless captured the Hampstead Park Corner League football and netball competitions at the Hampstead Park Community field on Independence Day.

    Damany Glenn scored the lone goal in the 25th minute to guide Third Avenue to a 1-0 victory over Mountain United in the final.

    Green Square captured third with a 3-0 win over 50/50 United.

    Troyland Williams of Mountain View copped the Most-Valuable-Player (MVP) award, while Nigel Murray of 50/50 United won the leading goalscorer title for netting four goals in the competition.

    God Bless won the netball competition with a comfortable 40-18 win over Mountaineers. Former national junior player Natalee Keyes of Mountaineers won the MVP award.

    God Bless also copped the Fair-Play award.

    Place So Special ended third with an easy 33-20 victory of Back Bush All-Stars.

    Friendship Park United won the Fair-Play award.

    The one-month competition, which involves communities from in and around the Mountain View Avenue area, was put on by Di Unit Promotion along with Thompson's Transport Limited.
