  • Speaking up

US men's coach Harvey Glance appreciates a good fiery speech from time to time.

So at a team meeting Thursday, Glance delivered one, giving an address on seizing the moment.

"I just told them to make this moment count," said Glance, who was named coach of the world team in early July.

"You can't run, jump or throw the rest of your life. It will come to an end real soon. Make sure you make the best of it."

Glance made sure to include the fact that he was part of a gold medal winning relay team at the World Championships in 1987. Actions, after all, speak louder than words.

"I just said, 'They can't take that away from you. Don't waste this moment'," Glance recounted.

Glance said he's been giving some thought - lots actually - to his plan for the 400-metre relay later in the week. Although the team dropped the baton at the Beijing Olympics - only to have the women's squad follow suit - Glance won't get too radical and rethink too many things.

"We're not being beat because of speed," Glance said. "We're getting beat because of technicalities. We're working on that."

Might Tyson Gay return to the third leg?

"I have an order in my mind," Glance said. "But I dare not put it out there."

  • Big reward

Every world record set at the World Championships in Berlin will come with a hefty reward.

The IAAF said yesterday that any athlete who sets a world record during the nine-day event at the Olympic Stadium will get a $100,000 bonus - pending ratification, of course.

"I am very pleased that ... the IAAF can use the World Record Programme to promote and celebrate the amazing achievement of any athlete who breaks a world record in Berlin," IAAF president Lamine Diack said in a statement.
