Bouquets for Lorna Golding

Published: Monday | July 20, 2009

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE simply to commend Lorna Golding, the wife of the prime minister, for her diligence in working hard to help the children of our country. I speak specifically of her vision exhibited in spearheading the formation of the Jamaica Early Childhood Foundation two years ago.

Through this foundation, Mrs Golding and her small team have sought to identify problems at the early-childhood level of the Jamaican education system, with the aim of also trying to come up with remedies.

The staging of the two series of concerts in 2008 and 2009 has been the highlight of the life of the Jamaica Early Childhood Founda-tion. Mrs Golding must be com-mended for introducing such a distinguished group of vocalists and instrumentalists who performed at the concerts.

Positive documentary

Another thing which has prompted me to write this letter of commen-dation is the recently serialised documentary done by American journalist Deborah Roberts, featuring Golding, highlighting the Jamaican attributes to which tourists gravitate. This was coupled with the show-casing of the warmth of the Jamaican people. I was touched by the last scene which saw a group of basic school children playing Jamaican ring games at Hope Gardens.

Golding follows in the footsteps of Beverley Manley and Mitzie Seaga who did much as spouses of prime ministers to build the Jamaican social fabric.

I am, etc.,
