Re public sector wage dispute

The Editor, Sir:

Regarding the wage dispute between the Government and public-sector workers, including the police force, of which I am a former member, there needs to be a cooling-off period of about two weeks so that an educated compromise can be reached.

The Government has breached a written contract that it signed. On the other hand, there is a legitimate argument to be made by the Government that the country cannot afford these increases at this time.

This argument should not be made with the tone the Prime Minister is taking, making statements like the Government will not be bullied. Prime Minister you broke a written contract, you cannot be wrong and strong. What you and your administration need to do is to take your case, which is a legitimate one, to the workers and show why you can't pay and come to some compromise.
