LETTER OF THE DAY - Avoid religious rhetoric against casino gaming
The Editor, Sir: This is an open letter to the Body of Christ and, in particular, to the leaders of the Church. I urge us not use this debate on casino gambling to prove "the world" right in believing that we are "too heavenly minded to be any earthly good"....

Amend the Constitution

The Editor, Sir: I quite agree with Mr. Lloyd Myrie's letter, published Thursday, November 8. Which leads me to wonder if there is anything in the Jamaican Constitution that allows for the electorate to be represented according to its choice...

JPs are volunteers

The Editor, Sir: A letter titled 'Overworked JPs' written by Vinette Mitchell-Forrester, JP, and published in The Gleaner of Tuesday, October 30, has just been brought to my attention. It charges that JPs "are already overtaxed with voluntary work that is extremely costly."

Road lines need repainting

The Editor, Sir: Driving on our roads is made difficult because the white lines indicating lanes or other functions are faded or non-existent. Depending on where you drive, the roads are not clearly marked. For example lines are on some rural highways and at critical locations...

Problems teachers face

The Editor, Sir: In response to a letter from Pat Bignall published on November 9, I would like to begin by agreeing with Ms./Mr.Bignall that the job of teachers really is an onerous one. I know as I am a teacher. Identifying disruptive children is not a problem.

Exam system needs review

The Editor, Sir: Regarding the article, 'Careless drivers put children at risk '(published November 7), I do believe that the whole process and standards by which a driver's licence is issued should be reviewed and updated. However, a holistic approach would be to certify instructors...

Getting a driver's licence

The Editor, Sir: The statement made by the police commissioner that it is too easy to get a driver's licence in Jamaica is very true. You just need money for any crooked licensing examiner to give you a driver's licence. I do wonder if these people are not aware of the danger...
