Amend the Constitution
published: Tuesday | November 13, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I quite agree with Mr. Lloyd Myrie's letter, published Thursday, November 8.

Which leads me to wonder if there is anything in the Jamaican Constitution that allows for the electorate to be represented according to its choice in the event that the successful candidate is proven to have dual citizenship? Or does it actually state that the opposing candidate (who was denied by the voters) be given the seat?

Tackling dual citizenship

I would think that if the matter is such an issue, first, steps should be taken to ensure that candidates with dual citizenship are not accepted for candidacy. Second, in an effort to promote the democracy that our voting system stands for, the Constitution should be amended to allow for the successful party to continue to be represented.

To cut a long story short, if we voted for it, do not use a technicality to give us what we did not vote for.

I am, etc.,
