Adolfus Moncrieffe openly said a prayer after he received a hot meal and other goodies during the annual St Catherine Poor Relief treat on Monday.

"Thank you Jesus for feeding us again. The food really nice and it makes me feel good like say Christmas is here," Moncrieffe said while sipping a cup of cold drink.

His comments did not stand alone as scores of other persons, who have also fallen on hard times provided similar views.

The treat, sponsored by the St Catherine Co-operative Credit Union and the Poor Relief Department, saw hundreds of indigent and street persons benefiting from the gesture.

Persons from the immediate surroundings also assisted with caring for those who are less fortunate by helping to share the goodies.

The recipients were treated to a meal and a drink. They were also given a musical treat by the sponsors.

Collective duty

Vinette Dixon, of the St Catherine Co-operatve Credit Union, said it cost the union about $100,000 to put on the treat.

Chairman of the St Catherine Parish Council Dr Andrew Wheatley told the gathering that it was the duty of all to make the less fortunate feel welcome during the festive season.

"We must care for the needy in a special way and that is why, in addition to the treat, we now have a care centre where persons can come and get a hot meal and a bath so that they can feel as well as any of us," Wheatley said. "The work of the Poor Relief Department will be an integral part of the council operation."
