Retired Chief Justice Kenneth Smith died Monday at the age of 89.

He served as chief justice from 1973-1985. In 1965, he was appointed Supreme Court judge, and in 1970 was named to sit in the appeal court until his appointment as chief justice.

Retired Court of Appeal judge Carl Patterson described him as "a kind and gentle man, learned in the law and who cared for all those who worked with him."

He will be sadly missed by the legal fraternity, Patterson said.

The retired chief justice also worked in the resident magistrate's courts. He was an assistant clerk of the courts from 1940-1948. He was deputy clerk of the courts from 1948-1953 and clerk of the courts from 1953-1956. He was appointed Crown counsel from 1956-1962 and was assistant attorney general from 1962-1965.
