Conditions that invite crime

Published: Tuesday | November 10, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

In the report titled 'Waterhouse weeps' in The Sunday Gleaner of November 8, the writer speaks of crime as "an unwelcome guest" that has taken up residence in the area.

I challenge the use of the metaphor. Crime is no uninvited visitor into any area in Jamaica. It didn't stumble by happenstance upon Waterhouse or anywhere else, but was invited. Yes, crime is a favoured guest in Jamaica, given room and board and is even being entertained.

The conditions were created to lure it here, and now it's here, those who benefit most from its presence are doing all in their power to ensure it stays, even if some have to suffer and die.

It is amazing, the remarkable restraint of the people of Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
