Rivoli's coach Bradley Stewart said now that his team has returned to winning ways, he will remain at the club as they are playing to instructions.

"Basically, I told them if they continue to play like they are unable to win then I would leave. They said it was impossible and they showed it today,'' Stewart said, after his team defeated Portmore United 2-0 to end a seven-match winless streak. They had lost three of their last four games.

Rivoli climbed to eighth on 10 points, whereas Portmore, who were losing for the second time this season - both on the road - stayed fourth on 13 points, three adrift third-place Harbour View, which drew 1-1 with Humble Lions in Sunday's late game at Compound.

Alanzo Adlam, who drew a penalty, scored the spot kick to give Harbour View the lead at the 65th minute. Errol Wilkie equalised for the Lions, scoring a free kick at the 89th minute.

The Rivoli-Portmore St Catherine derby at the Spanish Town Prison Oval saw the less fancied Rivoli dominating the early exchanges with last year's top marksman, Devon Hodges, recapturing the Midas touch - making deft moves on and off the ball - which forced several hurried clearances from the former champions' half.

Pressure

However, with mounting pressure from Hodges, Kirk Ramsey, Fidel Anderson, Ricardo Knight, Omar Parker and Fabian Gordon, Portmore conceded a free-kick in the 35th minute.

A superbly taken kick by Hodges shaved the wall of the Portmore's defence on way into the goal, setting off rapturous applause from one side of the stands and 'oohs' from the other.

The goal lifted the tempo of the game with Portmore coming into their own as Roen Nelson, Anthony Modeste, Wolry Wolfe, Carlington Smith and Gary McIntosh trying to revive their team.

McIntosh missed three clear chances for his team in the first half, one with the empty goal at his disposal.

In the second half, Rivoli, with the injection of former national player Garfield Reid and Abayoumi D'aguilar, started stringing a number of passes together.

With the crowd shouting "Rivoli, Rivoli" the Spanish Town-based team placed the icing on the cake in the 81st minute when Porter made it 2-0.

The goal came from a build-up between Hodges and Anderson, who passed to Ramsey about 25 yards out. The latter unleashed a powerful shot that left Shawn Sawyers a mere spectator.

Coach of Portmore, Linval 'Rudi' Dixon, said poor finishing hurt his team.

''We did not take our chances and Rivoli took theirs and we were defeated,'' remarked Dixon.
