Big win for Maragh

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (CMC): Jamaican reinsman Rajiv Maragh spectacularly captured the US$500,000 Darley Alcibiades Stakes on Friday evening when he rode the two-year-old bay filly Negligee to an impressive upset win at Keeneland.

Maragh brought the John Terranova II-trained animal with a late run to overtake the hot favourite She Be Wild and win the event for two-year-old fillies over 1-1/16th miles by half-length.

The victory was the first in a money-added event in three career starts and it earned the filly a spot in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup for Juvenile Fillies later this month at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

Tidal Pool took the field through the first half mile in 48.97 seconds with Decelerator in tow, as Negligee saved ground but remained within striking distance of the leaders.

As the race entered the far turn, Maragh took closer order as She Be Wild slipped to the front and went for the finish.

Maragh responded by kicking the filly on in mid-stretch and she obliged gleefully, overpowering She Be Wild in the closing strides to win in one minute, 43.76 seconds.

"She didn't break as fast like a true sprinter, so that was good," Maragh said afterward.

"She kind of relaxed and got behind horses and was pretty much settled behind horses, so it made her finish better."<
