Portland in over-40 semi-final

Published: Wednesday | October 7, 2009

Portland marched into the semi-final of the all-island over-40 cricket competition after defeating St Elizabeth by 31 runs in a rain-affected game at Folly Oval.

The game was reduced from 40 overs to 28 due to a soggy outfield, which delayed the start.

Portland batted first in the quarter-final encounter on Sunday and made 168 for six. Carl Brissett made 70 and Cecil Lewis 35, while Delroy Hewitt took two for 47 for the Saints.

In reply, the Saints were blown away for 137, with Wayne Billings making 34 and George Powell 33 against Carlos Gibson, two for 10 and Patrick Griffiths, two for 28.

Portland now await the winner of the Clarendon versus Domtar encounter, which has been rescheduled because the game was washed out on Sunday.

Portland had earlier defeated St Mary by seven wickets on September 27 to claim their spot in the quarter-finals. They routed the visitors for a mere 94 runs, then made light work, replying with 95 for three, with Brissett leading the way with 31 not out.
