Denied job because of religious persuasion?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am disturbed about the way in which employment opportunities are handled, especially in religious-oriented institutions.

First, it is the ultimate work of the Church to ensure that the members of her flock conduct themselves in ways that appeal to the public and especially to those aspiring to join the Church. The Church should also speak with one voice on matters of national interest.

Discrimination

In the past, I have been invited to interviews at four different institutions partly run by a church and partly run by the Government. Before I was called into the interview room, I was given a form which required me, in part, to state my denomination, which I did.

After the interview, I came across friends who happened to work in each of these institutions. During our conversation, I was surprised to hear that the church-oriented institutions hardly select individuals from outside their denominations, especially considering of my religious faith.

Nation building

Church leaders are expected to play a critical role in nation building and, at the same time, work to convert individuals to Christianity. It is sad to find out that the same churches are involved in some high levels of corruption yet they criticise others for the same.

I challenge those who continue to cover themselves in sheep clothing to desist and instead reflect Jesus Christ's true image in the church.

I am, etc.,
