Mullings

Clive Mullings writes about his two years as member of parliament today. All 32 JLP members in the House of Representatives were invited on July 13 to do the same but only Mullings seized the opportunity. The deadline for submissions was Friday, August 28.

The constituency of West Central St James has presented several challenges.

Poor road infrastructure, unemployment and a growing crime problem continue to dog my efforts to bring about a complete transformation.

Thankfully, I have managed to get work done on the dualisation of the Bogue road and to have the Fairfield road be part of the project. Some other roads have been repaired, such as the Westgreen and Catherine Hall roads, the Tucker main road and Crichton Drive in Mount Salem.

The Granville to Gutters road is slated to be done.

Sports funding

In the area of sports, I have managed to get the Venezuelan government to disburse US$11 million (J$968 million) for the Catherine Hall Stadium which will soon be completed.

In addition, I have had the Barnett Cricket Oval upgraded and the Catherine Hall Community Centre is scheduled for upgrading.

Mount Salem now has a post office, which will also house an Internet café.

In Retirement, an investor has been identified to build a housing scheme in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Housing.

The other major problem is unemployment, as the level of skills available is not sufficient to guarantee continuous employment. HEART is doing its best but many young people require remedial classes to pass the entrance examination.

Recently, J$4 million was made available to Herbert Morrison Technical High School for the completion of several classrooms.

The National Water Commission is devising a plan to meet demands of Rose Heights and surrounding communities. Gutters is also being looked at.

The other areas slated for work are the community centre in Bogue Hill and the roads in Wales Pond.
