Newly elected chairman of the People's National Party's (PNP) Region One, South East St Ann Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna, was given a vote of confidence by party members who attended the constituency conference on Sunday night in Claremont, St Ann.

Hanna was elected chairman of the PNP's Region One last Sunday at the Brown's Town Community College.

Former Region One Chairman, Mark Campbell, who did not seek re-election, in addressing party supporters at the constituency conference, said Hanna has, in the short period since being elected member of parliament, demonstrated that she has the strength and ability to serve the party and the people.

Encouraged constituents

Campbell said Hanna brought a level of unity to the constituency despite the controversy that followed her selection to represent the PNP in the constituency in the 2007 general election.

Campbell offered himself to serve the new chairman, however she thought fit, and encouraged constituents to work with her as, according to him, she was good, energetic and capable.

Several other speakers at the conference also praised Hanna's contribution to the PNP and the constituency since becoming member of parliament.

Hanna told the conference she was humbled and privileged to be entrusted with the leadership of the PNP's Region One council.

She said Region One, which consists of St Ann and Trelawny, has the opportunity for a bright future, given the earning potential of industries such as tourism and bauxite.

Hanna received support for the South East St Ann constituency conference from PNP stalwarts including Chairman Robert Pickersgill, General Secretary Peter Bunting, Deputy General Secretary Luther Buchanan and former ministers, Phillip Paulwell and A.J. Nicholson, along with guest speaker, former Health Minister John Junor.
