Vendors must issue consumer receipts

There will be zero tolerance for vendors who fail to issue receipts to consumers. The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC), in partnership with the Fair Trading Commission (FTC), has moved to clamp down on the trend.

If found guilty, a provider may be convicted before the Resident Magistrate's Court and be subjected to a fine not exceeding $50,000 or imprisonment for a term of 30 days.

An advertisement in last Friday's Gleaner noted that the watchdog agencies have received numerous complaints from consumers about the content and quality of receipts issued by businesses.

According to Dorothy Campbell, communications specialist at the CAC, the advertisement is timely as the last lap of back-to-school shopping gets under way.

"We chose to do it at this time to advise customers that it is critical for them to collect a proper receipt in their back-to-school shopping," she said.

"When establishments fail to issue a proper receipt, the individual's right is being infringed upon."

While no one has been fined for the breaches, Campbell said the agency was still keeping a watchful eye.

From April 1 to July 31, the CAC has been able to resolve 630 refund grouses from the 1,184 reported cases, resulting in compensation of $11,741,876.35.
