53 Jamaicans attain ACCA fellow status

Published: Wednesday | August 26, 2009

Fifty-three new ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) fellows will be inducted tomorrow at The Courtleigh Hotel in Kingston, joining 131,500 members in 170 countries worldwide as affiliates of the examination body.

Fellows are senior ACCA members who have had five years of continuous membership and have met all the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD). They can now use the letters FCCA after their names.

In the same manner as project managers and other such professions, ACCA members are required to undertake continuing professional development to broaden and enhance their knowledge base.

The ceremony on Thursday is slated to feature an address by Auditor General, Pamela Monroe-Ellis, as well as a presentation by manager, ACCA Northern Caribbean, Paula Marcelle-Irish.

Continued global growth

According to John Leslie, communications official with the ACCA international, the number of individuals seeking ACCA qualification has seen continued global growth. While there were no data available for Jamaica and the Caribbean, he said that over a quarter-million students sat the accountancy, finance and management examinations this year, with 5,416 completing final examinations.

Internationally, the ACCA, in June facilitated 362,000 students, with 187,335 candidates taking a total of 370,715 papers. This compared with 182,449 students taking 365,528 papers in December 2008.

The exam results, issued on August 17, showed that 5,416 students successfully completed their final examinations to become ACCA affiliates.

According to an ACCA release sent out on August 18, there was a notable improvement in the pass rate for the performance management paper (F5), but there were some disappointing results with low pass rates in financial management.

Clare Michington of the ACCA said the body would be discussing a range of possible measures and initiatives with tuition providers to further enhance support to its students.

The ACCA examination has been offered in the Caribbean since the 1940s. Countries which fall under the umbrella of the ACCA Caribbean include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, St Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and The Turks and Caicos Islands.
