Put criminals to work for food

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I believe much more can be done to lessen the impact of the global crisis on Jamaica.

For many years, I have wondered about the criminal justice system. For instance, a man commits a crime, is convicted and does his time. Just merely serving his time is unfair to the relatives and dependants of the deceased.

Take the case of a child whose father or mother has been killed. Who will take care of this child or a sick old parent? The convict should pay his time by providing for the victim's dependants. He or she should work inside the prison.

In terms of this economic crisis we are experiencing, Jamaica was once named the land of wood and water. We have plenty of underutilised lands which can be used for agriculture, and thousands of idle hands in our correctional facilities. I am suggesting that the soldiers at Up Park Camp should take the prisoners out in the fields and let them farm the land.

fight the crisis

This is not to undermine the role of a soldier because he would be doing his duty by fighting against this crisis and saving people from dying from hunger. The prisoners would be allowed to actively contribute more to society for the pain and suffering they have caused others. We would have enough food to eat and export; increase foreign exchange and improve ourselves. And for all those idlers lurking on the streets, they too can join into work with pay.

my money

I am a taxpayer and for 12 years, every morning, I have gone to work. Why should my money, as a taxpayer, be used to provide food, shelter, health and legal representation for criminals? They should work and provide for themselves.

I have seen many criminals do their time and come out looking fat and their skin clear, while I have to worry about how to survive this crisis or will I have my job tomorrow.

I am, etc.,
