BEAUTY - Cooling down in the summer heat

When the heat is on don't let them see you sweat, at least not too much.

We're certain that the sweltering heat is making the make-up on your face bubble over. Decrease the boiling effect with the help of simple make-up innovations. Start with waterproof or all-day wear products which should include foundation, mascara and eyeliner.

Before you apply any make-up, apply sunscreen, no matter your complexion. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you've heard it a million times before, but it's key.

"Be especially careful around the eyes," said Marlene Gray, make-up artist and owner of the Beauty Spot. Wearing a pair of shades and applying an eye cream before bed also help to maintain good skin.

When it comes to your foundation, Gray recommends one with SPF but, if your favourite product doesn't have it, applying sunscreen first will do the trick.

Make-up artist Paul March advises the use of a primer or a pore minimiser prior to applying foundation. This, he said, will give your make-up a little more lasting power.

Make Up For Ever, a line of professional, waterproof make-up, really packs a punch in his line of work. He also recommends Mac and Revlon waterproof mascaras as more accessible products.

Liquid foundation

For longevity, March recommends a liquid foundation. It will last longer after dabbing your face of sweat. "Liquid foundation seems to last longer than cream. It is less transferable," he said.

With heat comes perspiration and usually oil production. Reduce the sheen with an oil mattifier. "It helps to keep your face matte," Gray said. She recommends Mac's Cream Matte or Mary Kay's Oil Mattifier.

A good product is Cinema Secret Super Sealer/Sweat Stopper, a spray which helps reduce moisture on the face. This is applied to set the entire look.

"That to me is the ultimate," said Gray. Keep some blotting sheets close and these will also reduce sheen.

"We tend to want to powder over but doing that excessively will clog your pores," Gray said. She recommends blotting sheets by Mary Kay and Clean and Clear.

Gray is a make-up artist at Beauty Spot located at Lee's Fifth Avenue, Tropical Plaza, telephone 906-6151.
