PROVIDENCIALES, (CMC):

Puerto Rico continued to strengthen their grip on the 53rd Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship after winning one category and taking control of yet another one yesterday.

Starting the day leading in the marquee Hoerman Cup and the Higgs & Higgs Trophy, the Puerto Ricans lifted the latter and also took charge of the women's George Teale Trophy to take command of three categories.

The pair of Elvin Gonzales and Israel Ortiz shot a third round 68 to finish at 6-under 210 and win the Higgs & Higgs Trophy for super seniors.

Trinidad & Tobago were second with an even-par 216 after a final round 71 while The Bahamas were third at 8-over.

24 strokes ahead

In the Hoerman Cup, the Puerto Rican team of Rafael Campos, Erick Morales, Robert Calvesbert, Jose Rodriguez and Garcia Leopoldo were 26-over at the end of the third round, 24 strokes ahead of the OECS team of James O'Marry, Adrian Norford, Anand Harrydal, Chris Stutts and Ray Percival in second.

Barbados' team of James Johnson, Marcus Clarke, Simon Proverbs, Scott Foster and Sean Edey were a further nine strokes back in third.

Jamaica were struggling in fourth at 65-over with Trinidad & Tobago seventh at 108-over.

Puerto Rico's Patricia Garcia, Paola Robles and Maria Torres pulled out the stops in the George Teale Trophy to unseat T&T at the top of the leaderboard.

Starting the day two strokes behind, the trio finished the day 19-over to take a nine-stroke lead heading into the final round on Saturday.

T&T's group of Monifa Sealy, Martine De Gannes and Kelsey Lou Hing slipped to second at 28-over but held a significant lead over the OECS in third.

In the Francis & Steel Perkins Cup seniors' category, the Barbadian duo of Ricky Skeete and Robert Piggott continued to lead at even par, four strokes clear of the Turks and Caicos.
