Champion jockey Omar Walker highlighted the Independence Day 10-race meet at Caymanas Park with a five-timer to emerge Gleaner Sports Performer of the Week.
Walker won aboard his first three rides, FREEDOM PRINCE in the first, ALESIA WAY in the second and ROLL THE DICE in race four. He returned in the sixth to win with 12-1 shot SIMPLY AWESOME before closing his five-timer with NATURALLY ROYAL for his governor, champion trainer Wayne DaCosta.
The leading jockey was at his brilliant best aboard SIMPLY AWESOME, booting home the eight-year-old mare by a short head in a tremendous last-furlong duel with arch-rival Dane Nelson who rode runner-up MIDKNIGHT BLUE.
Walker's five wins took his tally for the year to 69, 10 more than Nelson, who failed to visit the winners' enclosure on Thursday.
