After a stint with the West Indies Under-15 team recently, 15-year-old John Campbell was expected to play a key role in Jamaica's quest for regional glory this year in the TCL Group WICB U-19 three-day and one-day challenge.

Well, so said, so done. After ending as Jamaica's second-highest scorer in the just-concluded three-day championship with 268 runs at an average of 44.67, Campbell returned to score 52 and claim 2-31 with his part-time off spin, to guide Jamaica to a four-wicket win over Trinidad and Tobago in their first match of the one-day competition.

A medium-built left-hander, who has an appetite for big shots, Campbell is a sweet timer of the ball and it is expected that, with his performances, he could very well find himself representing the region again at the next ICC Youth World Cup, which will be held in New Zealand in January.

"I am really happy with my batting thus far," said Campbell, a student of Tacky High in St Mary. "I was looking to score about 400 runs in the three-dayers but it didn't work out. But I am still grateful, and will be looking to do equally as well in the one-dayers," he added.
