Thompson on top at Suffolk Downs

EAST BOSTON, Massachusetts, (CMC):

Reigning champion Winston Thompson regained a share of the jockeys' lead at Suffolk Downs when he scored in Tuesday's seventh race.

The Jamaican pushed the five-year-old mare Silky Wings to victory in the six-furlong sprint to climb to 39 wins in the 2009 campaign, sharing the top spot with Orlando Bocachica, who had a blank afternoon.

Puerto Rico-born Bocachica had moved ahead of Thompson in their tight jockeys' championship tussle by winning on Saturday and Monday when Thompson went scoreless.

Surprise win

Silky Wings scored a surprise win in the US$15,876 seventh race under a confident ride from Thompson.

The former Jamaica Champion Apprentice held Silky Wings off the pace early in the event and gradually moved - from eighth position - towards the leaders leaving the backstretch.

Coming off the final turn four wide, Thompson roused his mount for a winning effort and Silky Wings quickened over the last furlong to win by 2-3/4 lengths in one minute 15.52 seconds.

Thompson is a five-time Suffolk Downs champion jockey. He won his first title here in 1995 and added crowns in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008.
