Help cops needing dialysis

Published: Tuesday | July 21, 2009

The Editor Sir:

I was very saddened by a recent radio report that retired policemen, who were on dialysis at a diabetic centre, had been removed from the list and were now faced with having to pay for their dialysis.

I agree with the Police Federation that this is totally unfair. When any man or woman has given years of service to their country and are faced with dialysis, they should be given it free. Provision must be made to accommodate them. There is no way a government pensioner can afford dialysis two or three times per week, which is the norm.

Die penniless

This country owes it to them. Dialysis costs, in your retirement years, can leave you having to mortgage or sell your home and die penniless, depending on how long you live.

Please, Mr Minister of Health, this matter should be addressed in the House soon.

I am, etc.,
